Green schemes receive £2m boost

By FWi staff

ENVIRONMENTAL schemes will receive an extra £2 million from the Government, with half the money targeted at the English uplands through the expansion of the Countryside Stewardship Scheme.

In addition, up to £500,000 will be spent on the agri-environment elements of the upland experiments in the Forest of Bowland and on Bodmin Moor.

The aim is to test whether an integrated programme of agri-environment schemes and rural development funds can work on a practical level.

Junior agriculture minister Elliot Morley said the pilot Arable Stewardship scheme would also be maintained for another two years, with an additional £500,000 allocated for new agreements each year.
