Growers call for patriotic sprouts
By FWi staff
HOME-GROWN Brussels sprouts should be renamed to reflect their British rather than Belgian origins, claims a leading grower.
The British Sprout Growers Association spokesman told the BBC Radio 4 Farming Today programme that the vegetables should by called British sprouts.
This would distinguish new sweet-tasting UK varieties which from traditional types, which have a reputation for a strong, bitter taste, he explained.
Sprouts picked up their Brussels name when they were developed by Belgian growers 500 years ago.
The British sprout industry has a 30 million turnover and involves more than 200 growers.
