Guernsey gives the society president a champion send-off

A CHESHIRE Guernsey breeder has ended his presidency of the breed society in style by taking the Total Performance Evaluation, RABDF supreme championship at this years EDFE.

John Posnetts fifth lactation cow, owned jointly with his business partner Andrew Hope, beat the Holstein in the competition which takes genetic value, performance and inspection into account.

The Guernsey, Tiresford Carmen 2, was also highest ranked for genetic index at the show. She calved in early August and her fourth lactation, 305 day performance records show a yield of 8534 litres at 4.95% fat and 3.57% protein.

Mr Hope, who led the cow to victory in the second year a Holstein has had to accept reserve position, said he was surprised to win. "I dont know if a Guernsey has won here before."

As well as being a week after Mr Posnett ended his breed society presidency, it is his 50th year of Guernsey breeding and it is also the last time Carmen 2 will be shown. She is soon to be flushed for embryo transfer, he added.

Reserve cow was the Holstein Castledon Bell India, owned by the Targett family.

Despite disappointment in the supreme award, Holstein cows won the events inspection award and exhibitor bred champion, with Bondvale Broker Natasha and Huddlesford Jolly Kitty, respectively.
