Herewards wet but looks OK

“IM dead chuffed that my Hereward hasnt grown out,” comments Phil Kinch who has just finished cutting wheat on the Lo-till Event site – Wicklesham Farm, Faringdon in Oxfordshire.

Hes heard reports that the recent rain has caused some quality wheats locally to sprout: “Thats understandable at the end of harvest, but not the beginning.”

Yield off the light greensand is a pleasing 7.6t/ha, although this is at an average of around 20%. The sample looks bold, “but thats probably the water its been sitting in.”

Barley has yielded slightly below average which has disappointed and surprised Mr Kinch, while oilseed rape has averaged a little under 4t/ha.

There is still around 150ha of Hereward, destined for Warburtons, Malacca, Charger and Claire to go.

Mr Kinchs team has pulled out all stops to get in as much as possible before the weekends forecast rain. “Its nice to have some work at last,” he says.
