Higher green taxes on the agenda
A WHOLE raft of new eco taxes could be on the horizon, according to Professor Jules Pretty, director of the Centre for the Environment and Society at Essex University.
He told delegates to the Farm and Wildlife Advisory Groups annual conference at Birmingham these would be levied to offset the bill of around £1.8 billion a year from pollution and health hazards created by modern farming methods.
That figure, calculated recently by the university, included pesticide contamination of water, put at £120m a year, damage to wildlife habitats and landscape at £125m, emissions from gases at more than £500m and food poisoning £169m.
