Highlighting rural crime
THE Farmers Union of Wales is urging farmers to make rural crime control a key general election issue.
Union leaders have already met senior police officers to discuss growing evidence that the use of CCTV cameras and neighbourhood watch schemes in towns is moving crime into the countryside.
The union wants more dedicated rural crime liaison officers, more patrols and the reopening of permanently manned rural police stations. It is also calling for the recruitment of paid specials who understand farming.
"Many family farms do not generate enough income to be able to employ sons and daughters full-time, perhaps working part-time as a policeman is an alternative," a union spokesman claimed. *
