Holstein herd dispersal gets keen support

By Jeremy Hunt

BIG dairy herds have been coming onto the market thick and fast in recent weeks, but despite nearly 400 lots on offer at the dispersal of the Chiltonpark Holstein herd the milking portion averaged a healthy £1013.

The Berks-based herd drew strong support from dairy farmers from as far away as Scotland, who competed with gusto to clinch 34 deals at four figures with a leading call of 3500gns.

Top-notcher was Vipersmarsh Vanetas Ricki, bred by J W Down and Partners, and sold to Chiltonpark herd owner Gerald Ward as a calf two years ago.

Ricki, by Kemview Vanetas Vision and out of a 12,990kg Inspiration dam, is bred from nine generations of VG or Ex-classified cows, and is descended from the noted Calbrett Astro Ricki (Ex-91). She was two months calved and was giving 34kg. She had a PLI of £28 and a PIN +£21. Buyer was Peter Andrews for his Ruckhall herd in Herefordshire.

The latest herd average for 177 cows and milking heifers was 9538kg so buyers had plenty of choice from well-bred, heavy milkers above that level.

Among them was the twice 11,000kg producer Wilcove Storm Helen (Ex-90). Bred by Anthony Pedigree Farms, she is out of a 12,000kg Prelude dam and made 2300gns to Messrs J &#42 and R J Manners of Faringdon, Oxon.

And for those wanting something capable of bringing home some silverware there was the smart in-calf heifer Chiltonpark Leduc Mona. She is out of a 13,200kg dam by Peartome Skydome and had been successfully shown at the National Holstein Show as a calf. The buyers at 1850gns were Messrs S and R Russell, Brinkworth, Chippenham.

Adding three good sorts to the familys Halstoe herd at Reading was Tim Metcalf, who paid most for Chiltonpark Full Gold Darling (classified VG-87) at 1600gns. By Failand Full Gold, and out of a Counselor cow from Crichel, Gold Darling had steadily improved over her first three lactations topping 10,222kg with her most recent.

Mr Metcalf also gave 1500gns for the 12,700kg Burlane Star Sweet (Ex-90). This Hanoverhill Stardom daughter was milking with her fourth and had given just over 9200kg in 200 days following the 12,700kg note with her third. She was inseminated in February to Carol Prelude Mtoto.

Best of the calves was Chiltonpark Leduc Dairymaid. She made 1300gns to Claire Jones buying for the Wiltor herd in Gwent. The 66 heifer calves at foot averaged £482.

Averages: 192 cows and heifers £1013; 56 served heifers £729; 41 maiden heifers £506 and two bulls £771 (Norton and Brooksbank). &#42
