Holstein trade lifts at Lancs event
TRADE lifted at the Lancaster Holstein Dairy Sale just before Christmas, taking prices to 1700gns.
Drinkall Brothers, stalwart supporters of this sale, achieved the top price and won the show championship. Pennine Poppy 554th, from their herd at Over Wyresdale in Lancss Trough of Bowland, was widely admired by ringsiders for her style and stature. She was out of a Skybuck dam.
This freshly-calved daughter of Caernarvon Jogger was giving over 32kg a day and was a convincing winner of the title under judge Steven Dennison whose Denmire prefix is no stranger to top honours in this ring.
"A tall and powerful heifer with a fantastic vessel," said Mr Dennison. Buyer was Aubrey Greenhalgh (Elswick, Preston) taking her for one of his regular clients in Northern Ireland.
Reserve ticket went to W and G Cornthwaite and Son with their Garsby Hokes Sylvia 2nd, a freshly-calved heifer by Etazon Hokes and out of a Weeton Ribble Star dam. She was giving 29kg a day and made 1350gns to J R Heuchan and Son, Castle Douglas.
This heifer was one of their four purchases which included Seawood Blaze 9th, a Juniper Park daughter from G and J Waddington, Ulverston taken at 1120gns.
Bailrigg Fuchsia 21st, from local dairy farmers B T and J Parker, realised 1000gns to A E Owen, Llannefydd. This Hanoverhill Raider daughter was bred from one of the Bailrigg herds best families noted for yield and longevity. Her dam, by Garthmyl Lord, has achieved nine lactations up to 9212kg and her grand-dam averaged 6525kg from eight calvings.
