Hormone beef ban ‘provocative’

THE European Unions threat to slap a ban on all imports of US beef is “legally weak” and “politically provocative”, according to an editorial in the Financial Times.

The threat has been made because European vets have found traces of growth-hormone in US imported beef labelled as hormone-free.

But the newspaper is critical of the European Union (EU).

It casts doubt on the quality of the scientific tests – “Brussels secrecy about how or by whom these tests are being conducted scarcely inspires confidence in their objectivity”.

The editorial urges the EU to “get its house in order” and resolve the dispute in a way “that fully meets its World Trade Organisation obligations”.
