Hurricane Mitch hits Chiquita

HURRICANE Mitch, which devastated much of Central America last October, also dealt a serious blow to Chiquita Brands, reports the Financial Times.

The US fruit producer and distributor incurred a $101.6 million (£62.3m) loss in the final quarter of 1998, adding up to a $18.4m deficit for the year.

Chiquita, which said the hurricane cost it $73m, is at the centre of the recent trade dispute between the European Union and the USA.
