Hygiene threat to French markets
FRENCH street markets, which account for 4% of the countrys retail trade, could be under threat from an EU hygiene directive.
In a fortnights time under Europe-wide rules the markets will require refrigeration, power points and toilets at points of sale.
Market regulars say the imposition of the rules will rob small farmers of their livelihoods, while the France-Soir newspaper called the directive “a dirty blow for the small farmers”.
The law is already in force, although not always observed, in the rest of the EU.
