ID project hopes to encourage uptake
CORNWALL EID, a new farmer-led project grant-aided by Objective One, aims to encourage more beef and dairy producers in the county to adopt electronic identification for their cattle.
Grants are available for electronic ear tags, handheld readers, in-parlour readers and appropriate computer programmes. Funding will also be available to install EID equipment in two Cornish livestock markets.
The project has trainers to help members set up and use the system, and encourage use of computer technology throughout the business, said a spokesperson at the Royal Cornwall Show.
The group hopes to work with processors on how EID can be used beyond the farm gate, to allow a free flow of data for benefit of producers and customers. A central database of members livestock is also to be set up as a basis for possible future marketing ventures.
While 170 producers are already said to be signed up for the project, it has a target membership of 300, so there is scope for more to join. *
