IN BRIEF

&#8226 SPLIT applications are essential to achieve effective control of volunteer potatoes in sugar beet, says Donald Westwater of Dow Agrosciences. He recommends 0.5l/ha of Dow Shield (clopyralid) before volunteers reach 10cm (4 in) across, followed by a further 0.5l/ha seven to 14 days later. At £35/ha (£14/acre) per application volunteer control is justified in terms of beet yield loss by populations as low as one volunteer every 2sq m, he claims. Yield loss work at Morley Research Centre shows 3t/ha (1.2t/acre) loss from one volunteer potato per metre squared.
