IN BRIEF

&#8226 AYRSHIRE NFU president Henry Murdoch has made a plea to all cereal farmers to bale their straw. "It will all be needed by livestock farmers in areas like ours which have been devastated by the wet weather. Fodder supplies are very short and more and more cattle are being loose housed. It is vital that our arable colleagues bale their straw to help us through the winter," he said.

&#8226 DAIRY farmers in the NFUs North East region are invited to a meeting at the Bridge Inn, Walshford, near Wetherby, Yorks on Fri, Sept 4 at 1pm to air their concerns. Michael Lambert, chairman of the unions milk and dairy produce committee, will be there to give an update on NFU policy and activity.

&#8226 MAFFS latest BSE progress report shows that the disease in the UK continues to decline. For the first six months this year, 1107 cases were recorded, a drop of 22% on the same period last year and 65% lower than in the first half of 1996.
