IN BRIEF

uCOMPENSATION payable in September for cattle slaughtered because they are suspected of having BSE will be a maximum of £517 if the disease is confirmed, and up to £646.25 if not confirmed by post-mortem.

uJUNIOR farm minister Elliot Morley has announced a new farm waste management initiative, targeting 500 farmers in important river catchments in England. Funds totalling £340,000 have been made available to provide advisory visits by ADAS consultants to farmers in certain river areas in Lancs, North Yorks, Humberside, Salop, Oxon, and two coastal areas of Devon. The consultants will then help farmers to develop waste management plans to establish where, when, and in what quantities farmers should apply waste in order to minimise pollution risks.

uTWO more cases of BSE have been confirmed on the Continent in recent days; one in Belgium, the other in France. That brings to five the total number of cases reported in Belgium. There have now been 41 cases in France, 10 of them this year. In both the latest incidents, the entire herds to which the two cows belonged have been destroyed. &#42
