&#8226 DAIRY producers can support local cereal and protein growers by buying British Farmers Choice – a 17% protein cake – says feed supplier West Midlands Farmers (WMF).

Using locally grown grain and protein, it costs the same as those made using imported ingredients, and will help cut the 7.5m tonnes of cereals and protein by-products imported annually, says WMF.

&#8226 WINNER of the South Dairy Farmer Challenge, awarded at the South West Dairy Show, is Robert Mallett, Northleaze Farm, Swindon, Wilts. Expanding production has helped spread overhead costs, with the 179-cow herd now averaging 8699 litres at 4.15% butterfat and 3.56% protein. Judges were impressed with the aim to expand the business by 10% each year, financed out of earnings.
