IN BRIEF

&#8226 FORGET Posh, Ginger, Scary, Sporty and Baby, theres a new spice to add to the list – Winter. Exeter market is the venue for the Winter Spice sale of 70 Holstein Friesian cattle from 20 leading west country farmers. "One not to be missed," say auctioneers Stags of the event next Tuesday (Nov 17). More details on 01769 572263.

&#8226 SEEMS like the clocks have only just gone back – but Christmas must already be here, judging by whats going on in markets. Auctions are already busy with festive events. Among the Christmas shows and sales taking place this week are one for newly-calved cows and heifers at Skipton, North Yorks (Nov 16), one for in-calf cows and heifers at Otley (Wharfedale), West Yorks (Nov 16) and one for dairy cattle at Clitheroe, Lancs (Nov 17).

&#8226 GENTLEMEN prefer blondes, so the saying goes. Well, Eric Mutchs Whitefield herd of Blonde dAquitaine cattle was the one preferred by judges in the Breed Societys top herd competition. The quality of the stock in the Banff-based herd has, according to the Breed Society, been the product of embryo work. And Mr Mutch says: "It can bring a 10-year breeding cycle in two years."
