&#8226 THE NFU has welcomed Tescos decision to source most of its free-range chicken from the UK instead of France.

The retailer has pledged to source up to 30,000 chickens a week from Premier Poultry in Notts. This will mean that all Tescos fresh chicken products – apart from some of its organic range – will now be bought in the UK.

&#8226 CAMBRIDGE-based biotechnology company Axis Genetics has been forced to call in the administrators because it cannot get the financial backing to carry on its work on vaccines in GM plants.

The company claims that the adverse publicity surrounding GM crops has scared off potential investors.

&#8226 FARMERS Ferry operators are in buoyant mood after transporting their millionth sheep across the English Channel.

Chairman Terry Bayliss said: "We are delighted to have reached such a significant landmark. We have ambitious plans for the ferry in the coming year and will strive to reach record levels of trade."

The company began shipping live sheep abroad 13 months ago.
