IN BRIEF

uSYNGENTA has completed DNA sequencing of the rice genome, the first project of its kind to be finished for a crop plant, the company claims. The breakthrough will lead to new opportunities to improve yields and qualities of all cereals, it says.

uAGRICHEM has introduced a new formulation of thiram, Thyram Plus. The new mix includes a pink dye rather than dye coming in a separate container to be tank-mixed and does not have a soak recommendation. With peas and beans almost certain to be sown in cold, damp soils protection from pre- and post-emergence damping off is vital this season, says the firms Alison Williamson.

uA NEW plant food supplement containing trace elements, vitamins and a range of amino acids has been launched in the UK after good results in Dutch trials, says Hants-based distributor ART. Used as a growth stimulant foliar spray Vegimax has given yield increases of 5-10% in a range of crops, says ARTs Tony Ive. "It costs about £20/ha." The product may also be used as a seed treatment.

uBEAN growers should have farm-saved seed checked for eelworm infestation or use certified seed to avoid yield losses of up to 75% and possible crop rejection, especially for export markets, says UKASTA. Bean stem nematode is becoming more widespread, with fields likely to remain infested for up to 10 years, it notes. &#42
