India increases pepper exports

INDIA, the worlds largest producer of pepper, increased exports of the spice by 5,473 tonnes last year to 42,669 tonnes.

Indian production of black pepper fell 7,000 tonnes to 55,000 tonnes in the season to October 1997. Brazil and Indonesia, also reported lower crops.

Meanwhile, the Indian Pepper and Spice Trade Association plans to hold roadshows throughout the world in a bid to attract foreign trading houses. The trade body launched the International Pepper Futures Exchange at Kochi in Kerala, in the south of India, last October.
