Indian mango crop fails

INDIA has been unable to lift mango exports by its goal of 25% this season because of failed crops.

The quality of Indias mangoes is also not up to par, according to trade official Om Ladia. Crop failure is attributed to unseasonal rain in November and December and hail storms and high temperatures in February and March. Blossom blight and other viruses were also a problem.

Mango-producing states say the crop will be less than 7 million tonnes compared with nearly 11m tonnes in 1996-97.
