OFFERS of barley to Intervention have reached 684,000 tonnes, according to the Intervention Board this afternoon.

About 135,000 tonnes have been accepted into store, although analysts continue to predict that end-of-season intervention stocks could total a massive 1 million tonnes.

Intervention values are so attractive that open-market trade is virtually non-existent say merchants. Ex-farm feed barley is worth only £70/ 7t, according to the Home-Grown Cereals Authority.

The trade in barley futures is also quiet. No contracts on the LIFFE futures market were exchanged this morning.
