Irish meat plant blockade goes on

A BLOCKADE of meat processing plants throughout the Irish Republic by farmers continued yesterday, despite a court-imposed IR100,000-a-day (UK78,500) penalty.

The fine was levelled against the Irish Farmers Association by the High Court last week for defying a judges ruling that the picketing of some 40 plants should end.

Meat processing companies have been forced to lay off more than 3000 workers and supermarkets have reported a shortage of products because of the farmers action.<

The picketing started as a protest over an inspecting levy introduced by the meat firms.
