Italians in milk quota protest

MORE than 2000 Italian milk producers with 300 tractors descended on Cremona – site of the countrys most prestigious dairy show – to protest about the application of milk quotas.

Although the deadline for submitting production figures to Brussels passed several weeks ago, it is still not clear whether super-levy will be charged or not.

The farmers attending the protest, organised by rebel union COBAS, were encouraged by provisional figures putting Italy about 600m litres below its 9.9bn litres quota. This would be the first shortfall since individual quotas were allocated in 1992/93. &#42
