JD ventures eastwards

JOHN Deere is looking to the east and may soon have a conventional crawler tractor in its range.

Deere, reportedly, is to acquire up to 30% of the Belarus-based Minsk Tractor Works (MTZ). MTZ says it intends to form a joint venture with Deere – both to make tractors over 200hp and work on the production of the 150hp-180hp Belarus tracked tractor.

Given the state of the agricultural machinery market in the west, such a venture could make sense and give Deere access to a – comparatively – massive market.

lMTZ is the largest tractor manufacturer in Belarus and, in the first half of this year alone, turned out 14,713 units. &#42
