Keen interest spurs organic growth

INCREASED consumer interest in how food is pushing up demand for organically-produced meat and vegetables, reports The Herald today.

Consumers appear to be willing to pay premiums of almost 100% over conventionally-grown produce to obtain the organic equivalent, the newspaper says.

The paper reports studies which show wide disparities in price between conventional and organically-grown produce.

But little of the organic produce is grown in Britain. Most is imported from the Netherlands, Italy and Spain.
