Kenya forecasts record tea harvest

THE Tea Brokers Association of Kenya says the country is on target for a record tea harvest this year.

It has reached its conclusions on the basis of the crop from the first quarter which showed a rise of more than 96% on the same period in 1997.

The first quarters figure is estimated at 86.5 million kg. The annual figure could outstrip the previous record of 257m kg in 1996 if the level is sustained.

However, the increase needs to be seen in the context of what the Financial Times reports was a poor year in 1997, when the production figure was just 220m kg – 25% below average.
