Labour mans milk quota gaffe
SCOTTISH Labour spokesman on agriculture, John Home-Robertson, was accused on Monday of showing a fundamental lack of understanding of the dairy industry.
During an all-party forum in Edinburgh, organised by the Scottish NFU, Mr Home-Robertson said he wanted to get rid of milk quotas to allow extra for cheese production which could replace imports.
John Duncan, chairman of Scottish Milk, said the idea showed a deep lack of understanding. "We have a 10% surplus of milk and you talk about removing quotas. The level of cheese imports has nothing to do with lack of home production and everything to do with the strength of sterling," he said. *
