Lady Crofts a beauty

By Jonathan Long

WITH the Royal Highland Show on again and England losing the football, the Scots were in party mood last week and nowhere was it more evident than the stock lines at Ingliston.

Leading the way was 21-year-old Brendan Hayward with an Aberdeen Angus cow, Lady Croft Beauty Lass, from his 80-cow Perthshire-based herd which was started by his grandfather when Brendan was just six weeks old. "A superb cow with excellent motion, which displays all of the breed characteristics," was how interbreed judge John Mackie described her. Standing reserve to the Angus was commercial cattle champion, a Limousin cross heifer from noted showman Ewan Macpherson of Argyll.

While the English may not have fared well in Japan, a raiding party to Edinburgh did manage to clinch four breed championships and five reserve breed rosettes in the cattle lines, including some of the furthest travelled cattle at the show. Mortimers Farm made the long trip from Eastleigh, Hampshire and took back the Charolais championship with a two-year-old heifer, Mortimers Racey.

The dairy championship went to a fourth calving Holstein cow, Morwick Sand Queen, from D A Howie and Sons. It was their first time at the show for 16 years and their achievement was all the more special as the cow was sired by their own bull, Morwick Sand Ranger, imported from Canada as an embryo.

In the sheep rings a ewe from Barclay Mairs Muiresk Suffolk flock took the interbreed title, resulting in a unique achievement for the flock. The three crop ewe, by Muiresk Marci Marvellous and out of a homebred ewe by Pankymoor Prelude, had been shown at the Highland twice before, as a ewe lamb and a shearling ewe, winning the Suffolk breed championship on both occassions and the interbreed award as a shearling ewe.

The reserve ticket went to a Texel shearling ewe from John Forsyth, she was the pick of her breed classes and was rated by Texel judge Victor Chestnutt as a ewe with plenty of carcass and bags of character. Elsewhere in the sheep lines discussion centred around the Blackface champion, a ram from D C and J J Marshall, the tup which cost £37,000 in 2000 has been scrapie resistance genotyped as VRQ/VRQ and is, therefore, ineligible for use in National Scrapie Plan member flocks.
