Lamb prices carry on up

LAST weeks improved lamb trade has continued, with Monday markets reporting prices up on the week and higher than the same day last year.

Mondays average was 118.16p/ kg lw, up 1.08p on the week.

Market gossip reveals no clear explanation for the price rise, though rumoured supermarket lamb promotions in France or at home are common suggestions.

At Ludlow market, auctioneer Clive Roads found trade "very tidy, with excellent quality lambs and very keen buyers".

The entry at Ludlow was down a little on the week, possibly because recent heavy rain and lower temperatures had set back lamb growth.

Gavin Loynes at Gloucester on Monday found "everyone looking for lambs, both for export and for the home trade".

Gloucester averaged 121.5p/kg, up about 0.5p on the week and well up on the 108p/kg taken two weeks earlier.
