Let stores lead a similar life
STORE cattle buyers can take advantage of improvements to cattle traceability to ensure calves get off to a good start on arrival at the farm.
Reading-based ADAS senior livestock consultant Elwyn Rees advises contacting the previous owner to find out what stores were fed and the type of housing, so that weight loss, scours and metabolic upsets can be avoided.
"It is important not to introduce grass too abruptly. Ensure stores receive some of the forage or concentrate fed before purchase to allow the rumen to adjust." Also try to use a similar type of concentrate, adds Dr Rees.
"When they were fed large amounts of concentrates continue to offer some in the field, gradually weaning on to forage or other concentrates over two weeks." *
