Limousins – could be worse
IT COULD have been a lot worse – that was the general comment as 125 Limousin bulls averaged £2634.
As one ringsider said: "This Perth was never going to be easy. For sellers its been a bit like jumping off a cliff. Some came down with crash, others found a ledge to cling on to." The average ended down £1000 on the year.
Limousin bull Stockdales Muscular, a June 1996-bred son of prepotent sire Broadmeadows Cannon, secured the championship for Kenny Veitch who runs his Albian herd in Co Fermanagh. He was bought suckling his Triomphe-sired dam when Cumbria breeders Messrs Stockdale reduced their herd.
Bidding for this very modern young bull quickly reached 5000gns and then settled at the top price of 6200gns. Buyers were Ulster AI Services, Co Antrim.
Lockerbie breeder Peter Henshall stood reserve champion with his Ronick Cosmos son Ringway Meteor. Bred out of a Marden Umph dam he was another that impressed for conformation and style and a 6000gns call secured him for Andrew Yule, Aberdeenshire.
More Ronick breeding came good for Messrs Gammie (Dunbar Farms) Kincardineshire when their Westpit Mirage, a son of the Ronick Gains sired Carse Impact, was pulled out to stand reserve intermediate champion. He made 5500gns to David Nicol, Glenisla.
The Elgin herd run by Jim Pettigrew near Glasgow enjoyed its best trade for the Cannon son Elgin Montana, a bull that had taken nine local show championships last season. He made 5100gns to John Johnston, Orkney. A full brother to Elgin made 10,500gns three years ago in the same ring.
Richard Oates Lumbylaw Machiavellian, a Lumbylaw Handsome son from his 300-cow herd in the Borders, made 5000gns to Messrs Adam, Glasgow.
