Livestock crisis knock-on effect

PROBLEMS in the livestock industry are casting a deep shadow over all farming businesses, even in predominantly arable areas.

According to Pam Forbes, regional director for the NFU in East Anglia, the difficulties faced by the livestock sector pose a threat to the regions farming "balance".

"Cereal growers, who are themselves experiencing very low prices and what is likely to be a prolonged and costly harvest because of the recent poor weather, rely heavily on the livestock feed trade for their own sales.

"With the serious downturn in the profitability of both pigs and poultry too, the future looks very grim," said Mrs Forbes. &#42
