Local authorities to tarmac rural England

LOCAL authorities throughout England are planning to build more than 130 roads with the help of private-sector funding – undermining efforts to reduce traffic.

The Council for the Protection of Rural England has warned that instead of looking for alternatives, many councils plan to “build their way out” of traffic congestion problems.

A report published today, New Money for Old Roads, calls for the Governments transport white paper, due next month, to provide councils with the means of finding an answer to congestion without building new roads.
