London pig rally set for Saturday

PIG farmers from across the country are expected to converge on London tomorrow (Sat) to attend a march organised by the British Pig Industry Support Group (BPISG) to draw attention to the plight of the industry.

The demonstration, which has been endorsed by the NFU and the British Pig Association (BPA) will start at Temple Place at 12.30pm and follow a route that passes Downing Street and ends in Trafalgar Square.

Between 2000 and 4000 marchers are expected to attend, calling on retailers, caterers and consumers to back British pigmeat and exclude imports that do not meet UK animal welfare and hygiene standards.

Next week, six senior industry representatives, including members of the NFU, BPA and BPISG, will travel to Denmark on a two day fact-finding tour to look at Danish feeding and welfare systems.

The group will visit farms and abattoirs and hopes to be able to quantify how much of the meat exported to Britain meets the legal requirements now enforced on UK producers.
