Looks good for beef

GOOD money can be made from UK beef rearing in the coming year, according to Dalgety beef consultant David Allen.

"Calves bought last autumn and reared to professional standards on an 18-month forage-plus-concentrate regime offer gross margins at todays sale price of about £180 a steer before BSP," says Dr Allen. "Even if slaughter prices only increased by a modest 5p/kg by the spring of 1998, rearers stand to achieve margins of over £200 a head." &#42
