Lumbylaw BLUP Lims sold

LUMBYLAW, the UKs largest Limousin herd with about 300 cows, staged a big production sale offering some of the breeds most advanced BLUP recorded genetics.

On offer were 142 head, including a large proportion of calves by the high-BLUP rated Haltcliffe Hercules, which has been ranked in the top 1% for calving and top 1% for beef value in the National Sire Summary. At the herds 1997 spring sale his 15 sons averaged £4300.

Although most previous herd sales have been staged at the home farm at Jedburgh, Roxburgshire, this event was held at Carlisle for owner Richard Oates.

Leading bid came for the 1992-bred Lumbylaw Hope, a daughter of the herds well-known show cow, the Goldies Reservoir-sired Lumbylaw Vinny. Hope is by the Sanctus son Lumbylaw Almanac and was sold with a stylish Sept-born heifer calf by Guguss.

Guguss was imported from France in 1995 after topping his test at the Lanaud Station. He is out of Ulla, one of the top cows in France. This Lumbylaw outfit oozed potential for buyer M Schofield, Cheadle, Cheshire.

Suckling her second calf, a Sept-born Lumbylaw Handsome-sired heifer, was Lumbylaw Ibetha. This young cow is bred on some of the best Goldies lines that have been such an influential part of the Lumbylaw herds development. She is by Goldies Fandango and brings in the great breeding cow Goldies Alice and Reservoir.

Ibetha, a high notch performance cow with a Beef Value of +£28, was in-calf to Hercules. She made 3100gns to M Van Dijk, Haverfordwest.

Averages: 50 cows (served and/or suckling) and including calves £2061; six heifers served and/or suckling and including calves £2371. (Harrison and Hetherington).
