Mackie business goes organic

ORGANIC farming has claimed its biggest convert in Scotland – the Mackie familys multi-million-pound ice cream and conventional farming business in Aberdeen.

Maitland Mackie is chairman of the family business and chairman of the Scottish Agricultural College.

He made the announcement on the eve of the first Soil Association conference and annual meeting.

He had previously dismissed organic farming as “hocus pocus”, but he said he was now “just a wee bit down the road to Damascus”.

Mackie said the decision to go organic had been made on commercial grounds.

The company plans to convert its 400-cow Jersey dairy herd to organic production and also its 809ha (2000 acre) farm.
