MAFF acts on foreign pig welfare

OFFICIALS are to be assigned to ensure that foreign pigment producers tell the truth about the welfare conditions in which their animals are reared.

The two new staff, appointed by agriculture minister Nick Brown, will also check that supermarkets adhere to promises to stock a certain percentage of UK produce, reports Radio 4s Farming Today programme.

This comes after pressure from beleaguered pig producers. On Tuesday a group picketed the Norfolk headquarters of Tulip and Danepak International importers.

UK farmers claim they have been disadvantaged by stall and tether ban introduced this year.

They say many competitors produce cheaper pigmeat by retaining the less welfare-friendly stall and tether system.
