MAFF launches scrapie survey

By FWi staff

THE Ministry of Agriculture will send 11,500 questionnaires to British sheep farmers later this month in a bid to establish whether the extent of scrapie in the national flock is being under-reported.

A ministry official stressed that the survey would be completely anonymous.

“We are not looking to penalise anyone or check whether they are doing things correctly,” he said. “What we want is a true picture of the disease so that we can tackle it properly.”

The survey is part of a package of measures initiated by MAFF after its BSE advisory committee suggested that more work must be done to discover whether BSE had jumped from cattle to sheep.

The survey forms are likely to be sent to producers next week and should be returned by the end of December.
