MAFF sets scrapie compensation

By FWi staff

THE compensation payable for sheep or goats slaughtered in May as a suspected scrapie animal has been set by MAFF today (Tuesday).

A sum of £22.61 will be paid if scrapie is confirmed by post mortem and for cases subsequently confirmed as unaffected whatever is the greater of:

  • The amount payable for a confirmed case and;
  • Such sum as appears to be, having regard to any evidence provided by the owner of the animal slaughtered, to reflect the market value of the animal, subject to a maximum sum of £400 for each animal.

The compensation rate has been determined by reference to the average cull ewe market price and the numbers of animals sold in great Britain in the month of March 1998, as published by the Meat and Livestock Commission weekly UK market survey.
