Maintain good staff relations
Maintain good staff relations
MANAGING and achieving good relationships is essential when building up a farming business, particularly with staff members.
Jim McCarthy, a first-generation tenant farmer in Ireland, told conference delegates that quality of life is dependent on relationships formed with others.
Gracious handling of staff relations are particularly important to Mr McCarthy and he defined staff management as soliciting voluntary action.
This can be achieved by empowering staff to make their own decisions, yet management should retain ultimate responsibility.
"Look for integrity and enthusiasm when employing people as they will endeavour to do things right and are easily trained. They have the drive required to advance the business," he added.
In return, managers should respect and thank individuals for their contributions and challenge staff to bring about changes that will improve business growth. *
