MDCadvice could repay thousandfold

DAIRY farmers across Great Britain are being encouraged to put research into practice using a new scheme launched by the Milk Development Council.

The initiative, £1000 for 1000 cows, aims to get more milk producers to use MDC work. It offers groups of dairy farmers with 1000 cows between them £1000 to pay a consultant to advise on how a piece of research can be most efficiently put into practice.

"Farmers main focus is to keep their businesses afloat. They will only make changes if they can get something out of it," says Kevin Bellamy, MDCs technical manager. "£1000 for 1000 cows is about helping them to make the first step."

Once members of a 1000-cow group have decided on the research they wish to use and have found a consultant, they put their proposal to the MDC. The initiative follows a successful pilot project set up 6 months ago with nine groups.

Angus Gaudie, who has 100 cows at Stamfrey Farm, West Rounton, Northallerton, took part, examining the establishment of clover in grassland. "Our group was already formed as we are all in organic conversion. But the MDC scheme enabled us to study a topic which is very important for organic dairy farmers," says Mr Gaudie.

The group intends to study another relevant area soon using MDC funding. "We have definitely found it worthwhile and I would certainly encourage others to take part. And it is good use of levy payers money," he adds.

Up to 100 groups or more will be able to take part – the number is not fixed, says Mr Bellamy. The MDC aims to collate information so other dairy producers can benefit.
