Milk processing no easy option
MONEY can be made out of investing in processing milk – but it is an expensive business which runs a high risk of failure, according to a leading Scottish dairy industry analyst.
Dr Donald McQueen, writing in The Herald, points to the recent closure of the Isla Creamery to support his argument.
He also pointed to interim results from Britains “big four” dairy companies – Unigate, Wiseman, Express and Dairy Crest.
He said the evidence that came of these companies results suggests that added-value branded goods produced the real returns while profits on commodity products remained tight.
