Minister in talks on whole calves

GOVERNMENT officials are in talks with the European Commission about whether British farmers can start exporting calf carcasses out of the country.

The talks concern the possibility of allowing meat from very young animals out of the country on the bone rather than off the bone.

Agriculture minister Nick Brown told MPs earlier this week he felt there was clearly a case for exporting animals under one year old as whole carcasses.

However, the move would require an amendment to the rules of the Date-Based Export Scheme under which beef is currently exported, he added.

Mr Browns comments came as he appeared before MPs to talk about the governments action plan for farming revealed at the farm summit in March.
