Mixed results in East Anglia

BARRY HOWARD, of Framlingham Farmers has heard variable feedback from the harvest so far. The co-op has farmers in North Essex, West Suffolk and South Norfolk.

“The yields for oilseed rape has been disappointing.” Yields are varying from 2.5-3.7t/ha (1-1.5t/acre).

“At the high end, the crop is certainly not barn-busting and is less than last year.”

Winter barley yields are between 6-8t/ha (2.5-3.25t/acre). The low end is disappointing and the higher end is average.

“Pearl is showing big and bold grains.” But there is variable nitrogen from 1.35-1.92%, although he says there are more in the low region.

“There will be blending opportunities,” he said. Fanfare is also producing low nitrogen, but he believes growers are not overly happy with Regina.
