MLC commissioner posts advertised

MAFF has advertised the posts of all commissioners on the Meat and Livestock Commission except those of the chairman and his deputy.

The 12 successful candidates, responsible for devising MLC policy, will be drawn from across the industry to provide a wide spectrum of representation. Serving for three-year terms, they will be paid £6820 a year for an average of three days work each month.

An MLC spokesman explained that, usually, only one or two posts a year became vacant. But after the Nolan committee report on standards in public life, which encouraged openness and transparency in government, MAFF was now required to advertise positions. So, even though some commissioners could be reappointed for a second term, all the posts have to be advertised.

MLC chairman, Don Curry, and deputy chairman, Mike Buswell, were recently reappointed by farm ministers. &#42
