MLC warns over sheep inspections

VISUAL inspection is just not good enough if commercial lamb producers want to make money, according to the Meat & Livestock Commission.

Jenny Anderson of the MLC says farmers should pay attention to performance figures, rather than judging an animals value visually.

Dr Anderson, interviewed by The Herald before the Kelso ram sales, advised farmers to select for high growth rates and a high lean index.

But visual inspection appears to remain the most scientific method used for assessment by most farmers.
Recent statistics suggest that only 48% of prime lambs meet the desired specification.

Some 7,000 rams of 15 different breeds will be on sale today at Kelso.
