‘Momentum grows’ to oust Ben Gill

By Adrienne Francis

MOMENTUM is growing for a change in leadership of the National Farmers Union, according to a story the Times.

“Farmers in move to oust union president,” says the headline, following up a report on FWi regarding a possible leadership challenge.

NFU vice-president Michael Paske has refused to rule himself out after being nominated to challenge Ben Gill for the union presidency.

Many farmers believe the NFU would benefit from more visible action instead of Mr Gills quiet diplomacy with the government, the paper says.

The Carmarthenshire branch also believes Mr Gill should make way. It wants NFU deputy-president Tim Bennett to stand for election.

Other farmers are trying to win support for a two-week disruption to the food chain in the spring, the paper adds.

One farming activist confirmed talks were taking place to organise a 14-day withdrawal of meat, milk and vegetables from the food chain, it reports.
