Monsanto named as breaking GM rules

THE Advisory Committee on Releases to the Environment (Acre) has named four companies for breaking procedures intended to stop genetically modified crops from crossbreeding with nearby plants.

They are Monsanto, Nickerson Biocem, AgrEvo and Plant Genetic Systems. The Scottish Crop Research Institute and the National Institute of Agricultural Botany also broke Acres rules.

Health and Safety Executive inspectors said it might be almost impossible to secure a conviction in court. But John Beringer, chairman of Acre, which advises the Government on the safety of releasing genetically modified organisms, said naming companies was worth far more than fines.
